2 CONT Jacob Artimaes (various spellings used) Kever (126) (1792-1880) was
2 CONC the first of the Kevers we know much about. He is shown on the 1820
2 CONC census in Iredell County, North Carolina but not on the 1810 one, so
2 CONC presumably he arrived there in that ten year period.
2 CONT
2 CONT Martha Kever Rakes has shared with me a history of the Jacob Artimus
2 CONC Kever family written by a descendant, Homer M. Keever. Much of the
2 CONC information about the Kever and Correll ancestors comes from his
2 CONC account. He says it is not clear who Jacob A.'s parents were, that
2 CONC some descendants think his father was named Henry, but no records can
2 CONC be found to document this. He says that Jacob A.(126), who lived at
2 CONC Third Creek, was probably the son of Jacob Kever of Norwoods Creek.
2 CONC Word of mouth stories told by descendants say that Jacob A.'s father
2 CONC died when he was about 12 years old, in 1804 or 1805 and there was a
2 CONC Jacob Keever at Norwoods Creek who died at that time.
2 CONT
2 CONT The same tradition says that Jacob was bound out to a blacksmith and
2 CONC census records bear this out. He became a blacksmith and used earnings
2 CONC from his trade to buy land for farming and taught his sons to be
2 CONC blacksmiths. Iredell County indentures of the day required that one
2 CONC bound out be given a rudimentary education as well as being taught a
2 CONC trade.
2 CONT
2 CONT In those days it was not uncommon for needy families to put out a
2 CONC child to serve as an indentured servant. The family from which he came
2 CONC would get some badly needed money, the the child could learn a trade.
2 CONC It seems plausible that this might have happened soon after the death
2 CONC of Jacob's father. Sometime about the time he was 21 and his indenture
2 CONC completed Jacob Kever (126) married Mary Ann Correll (127) who lived
2 CONC near the head of Third Creek in what was then Iredell County.
2 CONT
2 CONT The first documented evidence of Jacob at the head of Third Creek is
2 CONC to be found in two deeds made to him in 1817, one of which was made by
2 CONC his father-in-law, John Correll (318). Eventually, Jacob acquired and
2 CONC paid taxes on 530 acres on Third Creek and the head of Elk Shoal
2 CONC Creek. It is said that his goal was to leave each of his children a
2 CONC tract of land and there are deeds to some of the daughters to suggest
2 CONC that he tried it. After Mary (319) died in 1859 he made over his farm
2 CONC to his son, Artimus, to care for him.

2 CONT Mary Ann Correll Keever (127) spent all of her life near her
2 CONC birthplace in North Carolina but Jacob made a big move after he was
2 CONC widowed and an old man. He deeded his property to a son, Jacob
2 CONC Artimus, Jr. who wanted to "seek his fortune" in Arkansas. Soon after
2 CONC 1870 the son and his family, along with Jacob Sr. moved to the Wolf
2 CONC Bayou area.

2 CONT We have a copy of a letter Jacob A. (Sr.) (126) wrote on July 11, 1872
2 CONC from their farm in Arkansas which shows that wherever he got his
2 CONC education, he definitely had the ability to express his thoughts in
2 CONC writing, (but too bad he didn't have a computer with a Spell-check!)
2 CONC He was writing to his son, John Calvin Kever, and family who still
2 CONC lived at Taylorsville, North Carolina. Here's the letter:

2 CONC the riches. For helth we have good water near as any in these parts."

2 CONC into a nabourhood that you think he is the homlist person you ever
2 CONC saw. After you git used to him you will think that he is a rite pert

2 CONC sure how much influence his letter had, but only one of his other
2 CONC children moved to Wolf Bayou, Exie Kever Sharp. However, of course
2 CONC some grandchildren and great grandchildren came, including our
2 CONC ancestor, Hubert Martin.

2 CONT "Jacob Artimaes Kever - great grandfather of Hubert M. Martin and
2 CONC Samuel Gatis Martin, also of Arthur Marvin Kever, was born June 1792,
2 CONC died August 17, 1880 - 88 + years buried in Oak Grove Cemetery at Wolf
2 CONC Bayou, Cleburne County, Arkansas. He came to the United States from
2 CONC Germany, was of German "deutsch" descent, spoke the German language,
2 CONC then learned to speak English with considerable accent."

2 CONC sons and six daughters, most of whom lived their entire lives around

2 CONT "The ones (Kevers) from Arkansas went back to North Carolina in 1900
2 CONC or 1901. Some of us have some pictures and copies of pictures made on

2 NOTE Exie Kever Sharpe was the ninth of ten children of Jacob and Mary Ann
3 CONC Correll Kever. She was born in North Carolina July 23; 1836. After the
3 CONC death of her husband, Frank Sharpe, she and their children moved to
3 CONC Wolf Bayou, Arkansas. Her widowed father, Jacob Kever, was living with
3 CONC his son Jacob Artimus who had moved here in 1870. One of Exie's
3 CONC daughters, Amanville, had married John Barker and had taken up land in
3 CONC Section 19 at Wolf Bayou. Exie took a patent on land joining them in
3 CONC 1890. This land was beside the Batesville-Clinton Road and along the
3 CONC old Cherokee Boundary Line. (Now the home of F.J. Hartwick.)  Exie's
3 CONC children were (not in order of age): John, Walter Jacob, Orah, Matilda
3 CONC "May", Bevin, Amanville. With her Kever bloodline plus the large
3 CONC families raised by her children she always said she "reckoned she was
3 CONC kin to all of Adam's race".

2 CONC oath includes a physical description: Florid; hair Light; eyes
2 CONC blue;Height 5' 10 3/4" remarks: captured at Chicamauga, GA 20/ Sept.
2 CONC 1863. He returned to Arkansas after the war. Alfred's youngest son
2 CONC Luke told his son Ernest that Alfred was hung by Carpetbaggers between
2 CONC 1866 and 1868 near Detonti, Saline County and was buried at a site
2 CONC which is now an aluminum waste dump.

2 CONC moved to Ohio in 1828. They appear on the 1830 census of Rhea County,

2 CONC in McMinn County, Tennessee, with seven children.

2 CONC Civil War (Claim No. 5730, Cong. Ref. No. 5203) The commission was
2 CONC created in 1871 by an act of Congress to settle the claims of loyal
2 CONC Southerners for stores and supplies taken by the Union Army during the
2 CONC Civil War. Olive's statement of February 6, 1872 describes the seizure
2 CONC on May 4, 1864 of her livestock and supplies by Union forces
2 CONC retreating form the Battle of Jenkin's Ferry. She claimed compensation
2 CONC of $660. The claim was denied for inadequate proof of loyalty. She was
2 CONC still pursuing the claim on August 18, 1888, when she signed a power
2 CONC of attorney authorizing Nashville and Washington lawyers to represent
2 CONC her. That is the latest date that we know she was alive.

2 CONT Her 1872 claim stated that during the war she lived six miles from
2 CONC Benton. She was hard pressed to show that she was loyal to the Union.
2 CONC The most she could say was that she was indifferent toward the
2 CONC Confederacy, and always thought the Federals would win. "I did nothing
2 CONC for the Union cause except to give soldiers food when they asked it.
2 CONC They would have taken it anyhow." She had three sons in the Rebel
2 CONC Army, "one was conscripted before he was old enough." She had a
2 CONC brother in the Union Army, and "heard that one of my sons was in the
2 CONC Union Army." That may have been John. There is no evidence that he
2 CONC accompanied his parents on the trip from Tennessee to Arkansas.

2 CONT Olive stated that "My husband was at home when the war began but went
2 CONC north shortly after and never returned. My husband was a Union man, he
2 CONC went north because his sympathies were on the side of the union. He
2 CONC was too old to go into the army." Aaron Jr.'s name was on the deeds of
2 CONC November 18, 1865 which deeded over the land to his sons G.W.R. and
2 CONC L.A.W. Could this have been a forgery? His signatures were witnessed
2 CONC by his daughter-in-law Martha E. Coppock, and Louiza ROWLAND. An
2 CONC affidavit supporting Olive's claim was given by Churby M. KING, who
2 CONC said he had known her since 1858. Olive listed the following as
2 CONC witness to her loyalty: Green L. ROWLAND, John FINLEY, Sol W. SHAW,
2 CONC James FINLEY, and Moses THOMPSON. Named as witnesses to the incident
2 CONC were: John FINLEY, Green L. ROWLAND, and Olive's "daughters" Mary
2 CONC Coppock (Alfred's wife) and Elizabeth WEAVER.

2 CONC Meeting, Blount County Tennessee on January 3, 1818. They removed from
2 CONC there on November 1, 1828, and were received in the Union Monthly
2 CONC Meeting, Miami County, Ohio, on February 7, 1829. Aaron's will is in
2 CONC the Miami County Probate Court. In it he left "my Book Servits history
2 CONC of the Society of Friends" to his grandson Aaron Coppock (Luke Aaron
2 CONC White?). Could this be the same book bequeathed by John Coppock to his
2 CONC sone John Junior? All other books were divided equally among Aaron's
2 CONC sons, "except my family bible which I leave to my son Aaron in the
2 CONC State of Tenisee." Could this be the "Large Bible" which Abigail

2 CONC out. The estate sale records show that Abigail purchased a "Large
2 CONC Bible" for 4 shillings, 8 pence.

2 CONC were held, Friends of Bush River began to migrate to Ohio. Between

2 CONC about 1688 to Mary ORRELL? who apparently died before Aaron reached
2 CONC Pennsylvania. there were apparently six children born of this union.

2 CONT Aaron joined the Society of Friends by 1695, when he was fined for
2 CONC failing to pay his tithe to the Church of England. He left for
2 CONC Pennsylvania in 1701. His removal certificate from Mobberly Monthly
2 CONC Meeting is dated September 3, of that year, and says, "Aaron Coppock,
2 CONC being already gone to Bristol [the port of embarcation], himself and
2 CONC family." Use of the word "family" may indicate that his wife was still
2 CONC alive.

2 CONT On December 11, 1704 Aaron married Miriam (SHORT-THOMPSON) White,
2 CONC daughter of Adam (?) and Miriam (INGRAM) SHORT, at Upper Chichester
2 CONC Friends Meeting, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. It was Miriam's third
2 CONC marriage. She and Aaron had three children.

2 CONT The couple moved to Nottingham Township in Chester County,
2 CONC Pennsylvania, about 1713 where Aaron filled the position of church
2 CONC elder, overseer, and finally, minister of the Nottingham Meeting.
2 CONC Aaron's will is dated the 3rd day of the 10th month (i.e. December),
2 CONC 1726, at Nottingham, where he was buried in the Friends Burying
2 CONC Ground. The border was moved after the Mason-Dixon line was surveyed,
2 CONC and the cemetery is now in Cecil County, Maryland, at the intersection
2 CONC of Routes 272 and 273. there are no headstones, since Quakers of the
2 CONC day viewed them as idolotrous. Aaron's will is in Chester County,
2 CONC Pennsylvania. He named Miriam, his "loving and wellbeloved wife" his
2 CONC executrix.

1 NOTE Coppocks come from England, in the area surrounding Chester. Their
2 CONC names appear in many documents in the parishes of Wilmslow and
2 CONC Mobberly beginning in the 16th century. Cheshire and Lancashire
2 CONC records show COPPOCK men to have been skinners, tanners, slaters,
2 CONC plasterers, barbers, weavers, apothecaries, tobacconists, farmers, and
2 CONC yeomen (small land owners). The name was consistently spelled COPPOCKE
2 CONC until the mid-17th century when the terminal "e" disappeared and the
2 CONC name settled into COPPOCK, which it has remained.

2 CONT Fifteenth and sixteenth century English records yield more COPPOCKS
2 CONC than we can possibly sort out. However, we can be relatively certain
2 CONC of the name of the father of the first American COPPOCK. He was John
2 CONC Coppock of Mobberly, where he was born about 1636, and died December
2 CONC 31,1709. He may be the John Coppock who was baptized in Wilmslow on
2 CONC August 17, 1636, the son of Bartholomew COPPOCK and Margerie WHELTON.
2 CONC It is certain that he married Susann LOWE at Mobberly on June 4, 1662.
2 CONC she was born about 1632, and buried October 18, 1684 in Mobberly. The
2 CONC Mobberly christening book records five births to the couple.

2 CONT John Correll of Lancaster PA served in the 4th Battalion of Lancaster
2 CONC County under Captain Conrad Weubtze's Company.  Some notes say he was
2 CONC a Private 4th class in 1783, but payslips list him as a Sergeant in
2 CONC 1778 and 1783. John shows to have enlisted in the army on 2/13/1778.
2 CONC John received a land grant on Buffalo Creek, Rowan County, North
2 CONC Carolina. He sold the land in 1794 and removed to Iredell County,
2 CONC North Carolina. John is listed as Sgt., 5 CL. in the Historical
2 CONC Register of Virginians in the Revolution 1775-1783 by John H.
2 CONC Gwathmey, published in 1938. Also listed were Dudley Correll 12 CL.,
2 CONC and William Correll Pvt., WD. Wm. Correll was listed as executor on
2 CONC John's will. I lists him as "friend". There are two dates listed which
2 CONC could be significant. 3/9/1829 is the date of his will. 1786 is when
