Doug Coppock

Doug Coppock Bio

Doug Coppock has lived and performed in the Central Arkansas area since 1989. As a solo acoustic performer Doug has played at many of the Central Arkansas Folk Venues including Vagabond’s, Advent Arts and Acoustic Café, Salem Café, Suburb-B-Q, Sarathy’s, A Place to Eat, as well as private parties and house concerts. He is a singer/songwriter but also performs selected cover tunes, primarily those of Folk and Americana artists. He was selected as a New Folk Finalist (Kerrville Folk Festival’s Songwriting Competition) in 1985, 1987, and 1988, sharing the stage with the likes of Buddy Mondlock, Pierce Pettis, and others. Doug began attending the Kerrville Folk Festival in 1984 and since then has begun to perform songs learned at Kerrville as part of his solo acoustic performances as well as those he has written. The festival (held just south of Kerrville, Texas) is thought of as a “Songwriter’s Festival” and the emphasis is on “The Song”. He has attended song-writing school there and has studied with Rick Beresford, Allen Shamblin, Gail Davies, and others.

In addition to his solo acoustic work, Doug’s musical career includes a wide variety of music styles. In 1958 he was the co-founder of a group called The Emeralds. They almost hit the big time as an instrumental rock and roll band, but the big breaks didn’t come and eventually they disbanded. After a five year break, Doug began playing in cover bands in Houston Texas and continued to do so after moving to Arkansas, playing primarily “oldies but goodies”. Doug formed his own band and included many of the acoustic songs in his set as well as his own. In 2003 Doug and fellow solo acoustic singer songwriter Dan Clanton and with bassist Brooks Walthall, formed a group called Happenstance.  The group enjoyed remarkable success and put out two CDs from 2004 to 2013. They toured extensively and also played at festivals, including the Woody Guthrie Festival in Okemah Oklahoma.
